Investors remain cautious in relation to placing money into renewable energy causes. A United Nations conference in Leon, Mexico revealed that while investment in renewables showed a more than fourfold increase from 2004-2008 to $155 billion, the amount of money spent in 2009 marked a 40% decline on the previous year.

United Nations Industrial Development Organization Director General Kandeh Yumkella commented on the trend, citing the economic crisis and pressure on both governments and private investors for the decline.
